Orchard House FAQ’s

Q. When is the school open?

A. We are open 9.15am – 12.15am for morning sessions (Mon – Fri), 12.30pm – 3.30pm for afternoon sessions (please speak to staff for current schedule). Full days are available on certain days from 9.30am – 3.30pm, please speak to staff for availability. Please do not arrive early as we cannot accept your child before 9.15am. When collecting your child please be on time.

Q. Who do I tell if I have arranged somebody else to collect my child?

A. If you are not collecting your child you must tell a member of Orchard House staff the name of the person collecting them, we will not let your child leave the school with someone we have not been told about.

Q. Are there a maximum or minimum numbers of sessions my child should attend?

A. No, it is entirely up to you how many sessions your child attends.

Q. What ages does my child have to be to attend?

A. The minimum age is two years. Your child could start the term after their second birthday.

Q. Does my child need to be potty trained?

A. No, depending on their age they can attend the preschool in nappies or pull-ups.

Q. Can I provide snack for my child?

A. We provide a healthy snack and drink, however if your child has a specific diet or allergies please let us know and we will try and cater for your child’s needs.

Q. Can I visit the preschool?

A. Yes you can. Just give us a call and we will arrange a time for you to come in for a chat! 01920 486627.

Q. Can I change session?

A. Session changes can be arranged with adequate notice providing spaces are available.

Q. My child has physical difficulties can he/she still attend?

A. Children with special needs, like all children, are admitted to the preschool after consultation parent and the manager. We have an appointed SENCO (Special Educational Needs Co-Ordinator) who is responsible for any educational need a child may have.

Q. How will I know how my child is doing?

A. We operate a keyworker system where your child has one special adult to relate to, all staff are available to speak to at each session. Each child has a diary which their keyworker will write regular updates in which is kept in the child’s bag so the parents can read them and we also hold regular parents evenings to keep you updated on your child’s progress where you will be shown your child’s ‘Learning Journal’ full of photos of your child within the setting along with some pictures your child has created and a progress chart.

Q. My child has a comforter can he/she bring this with them?

A. We are happy for children to bring comforters into the preschool although your child will be encouraged to leave it in a special place so that it does not get lost.

Q. What kind of activities do the children get involved in?

A. We make a concerted effort to offer a broad and balanced planned curriculum using the Early Years Foundation Stage Principles (EYFS). Please see the activities page for more details.

Q. When do I have to book a place for my child?

A. We operate a waiting list on a first come first served basis depending on date of birth, we would advise placing your child’s name on our waiting list as soon as possible to avoid any disappointment. Please contact the preschool via email orchard_house1@btconnect.com

Q. How much do sessions cost?

A. Each three hour session costs £13.50. However from the term after your child turns three you will get government funding for up to 15 hours per week. Some three and four year olds may be eligible for 30 hours funding.

Q. Are the staff reliable and trained?

A. All our staff are childcare and first aid trained, and have regular training to keep qualifications updated. To see details on the staff’s qualifications please visit the Team page.

Q. What time can I drop my child off?

A. Please do not arrive any earlier than 9.15am as we cannot accept your child before then.

Q. What do I do if my child is poorly?

A. Please do not bring in a child who has been vomiting or who has diarrhoea until at least 48 hours after the last attack. If your child is going to be absent from school for any reason at all you must inform the school on the day.

Q. What should my child wear?

A. There are Orchard House branded t-shirts and sweatshirts available for purchase but these are not compulsory. The only thing we ask if you could provide your child with black plimsolls to wear. Please provide your child with easy clothing which they can manage by themselves, belts and buttons can be quite difficult to undo and although we are there to help our aim is to encourage your child to become as independent as possible.
